the SP AC4 and AC5 Cab Forward steam locomotives into the new BlueLine
Family. These DC-Sound equipped locomotives are extremely smooth and
powerful runners with sound that packs an incredible punch! Each
BlueLine locomotive comes factory-fitted with our own proprietary sound
system for DC -- All at a price that you'd expect to pay for units
without sound. And for all the DCC users out there, BlueLine
doesn't disappoint. We've included a NMRA Standard DCC Socket so you
can quickly and easily install your favorite DCC motor decoder.
History: The Southern Pacific
needed some powerful locomotives, but found that the new articulated
2-8-8-2's proved to be a hazard for the crews in the long tunnels and snow
sheds on their system. The 400 degree exhaust fumes from the low
pressure cylinders were blinding and asphyxiating the crew members. It
is a familiar story how the SP solved the problem - by running in reverse.
So the next articulated engines from Baldwin were built with the cabs in the
forward position. Eventually, there were many classes of cab-forwards
on the roster, including the virtually identical AC4 and AC5.
