"No Sound, DCC Upgradeable"
Units denoted as No Sound, DCC Upgradeable are units
that are not sound equipped and function only in DC. Modelers may choose
to install an NMRA compliant DCC decoder into the onboard socket to upgrade to
DCC functionality.
The E8's are 2,250HP passenger train
locomotives manufactured by General Motors Electro Motor Division in La Grange,
Illinois. Between 1949 and 1953, EMD produced 421 E8A units and 39 boosters or B
units. The 2,250HP was achieved by having twin 1,125HP engines in each
locomotive.
The E9's horsepower was increased to
2,400HP. Between 1954 and 1963, EMD produced 100 E8A units and 44 boosters or B
units. In appearance, the E9's are nearly identical to the E8's.
Most railroads purchasing E7's also
purchased E8's. Toward the end of their service, the E8's and E9's were
used for commuter and even freight service.
