Constructed by the Norfolk & Western between the
years of 1914 and 1924, 381 "CF" class cabooses were produced in the East End
shops located in Roanoke, Virginia. Built with steel underframes, wood sheathed
sides and asphalt type canvas covered roofs, most would be upgraded, repainted,
and relettered as the N&W transitioned through its varied lettering types
during the history of the railroad.
A perfect match for the Class A and the Y6b (see page 46
of the 2006 Product Guide), these cabooses could be seen on high speed freight
runs to Virginia's ports as well as coal runs from the mountains in West
Virginia. One of these cabooses was still in service in 1980.
Home now in parks and in private hands scattered
throughout the former N&W line, a few of the trusty workhorses can still be
found if only one wants to look for them!
Original construction cost between $1,149.31 and
$3,001.01
