"DCC & Sound
Upgradeable" Units denoted as DCC & Sound
Upgradeable are units that are not sound equipped and function only
in DC. Modelers may choose to purchase an optional Sound
& DCC upgrade kit, specifically tailored to the prototype which will add
DCC and sound functionality. Upgrade kit works only for PCM models with
PCM motherboards.
ALCO, a very established steam locomotive
manufacturer, saw an opportunity at the end of World War II to enter the
cab-unit diesel market. Following the very successful RS1, 2, and 3 series of
road switchers, Alco offered a newly designed locomotive and, thus, was born the
FA1/FB1 series.
The FA was designed to compete with EMD's
very popular "F" units. The FA was designed for freight service; the
complementary PA was designed for passenger operation. FA/FB production began in
January of 1946 and ran through August of 1950. Alco produced 393 FA1
locomotives and 225 FB1 booster locomotives.
At 51'6" and delivering 1,600HP, Alco's
four-cycle RD1 constant pressure super turbocharger increased engine output by a
whopping 90% over a normal aspirated engine. The FA1's capably handled their
share of freight duty as the major railroads sought the economy that the
diesel-electric locomotive offered.
If you model this era or just enjoy cool
diesels, the Alco FA's will be a welcome addition to your layout.
