The class 01 (BR01) is probably the most popular German steam locomotive ever. It was among the first locomotives built according to the "Einheitsbauprogramm" created by the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG), founded in 1920. The first BR01 locomotives were built in 1925 by the companies Borsig and AEG. Until 1937, other locomotive manufacturers also participated in the building of the BR01 engines. The BR01 was designed as a high speed passenger locomotive with a wheel arrangement of 4-6-2 (2'C1') and two cylinders resulting in a total power of 2240HP. In combination with a driving wheel diameter of 2m, the locomotive reached top speeds of up to 120 km/h. Then, after some modifications on the braking system, 130 km/h. Because the load per axle was 20t and the overall length was 24m, the BR01 could be used on main lines only. The locomotive performed well and it was a favorite with the engineers. A total of 231 locomotives were brought to service at the DRG.
