The New York Central commissioned famed industrial designer Henry
Dreyfuss to sculpt the streamlined shape for the ten J3 Hudson
In 1916, the Pennsy railroad
developed a new, supersized 2-10-0 steam engine that was powerful enough
to move the tremendous amounts of coal and ore being moved on the system.
Initial tests were impressive, and between 1918 and 1923, the PRR built
598 Class I1s Decapods. They were the largest 2-10-0 steam
locomotives in the United States, and they became the dominant freight
locomotives on the PRR railroad system until World War II. Sometimes
called "hippos", the I1s's were huge. Unfortunately, the large
boiler size limited the amount of space for large driving wheels, and the
result was a hard ride and hard work for crews. Their power was
undeniable, and they remained in service until the end of PRR steam in
1957. Our model is of the sub-class I1sa locomotives.
With the conversion to I1sa, Pennsy increased the maximum steam cut-off,
boosting low speed tractive effort. 489 of the hippos were
eventually converted.
In our 2021 production run, we
are offering three variations of the I1sa: one with the original
headlight position and a short 90F82 tender, one with a modernized
headlight position and the short 90F82 tender, and a third variation with
the modern headlight but with a 210F82A long haul tender. We will
also offer one painted but unlettered model - it has the original
headlight position and 90F82 short tender.
